what makes a house a home

What’s the difference between a house and a home?

A house is an object, a structure, a thing. It may be a vinyl-clad, faux colonial or a stately, urban brownstone.

A home is an object with meaning, a structure for life, a thing to collect memories. It is a place.

What makes a house, a home?

The feelings, the emotions, the experiences, the blood, sweat and tears, that the house is imbued with … they make a home.

All those things add up to meaning and that is the answer to everything.

We look for things with meaning and cherish things with meaning and search for the meaning everyday. We strive to add meaning.

Meaning is what we hold in our heart and home is where our heart is.

This is my latest installment for the monthly #ArchiTalks series.

Every month, someone from the #ArchiTalks crew throws out a topic and a growing number of us in the architectural profession wax poetic (more or less) on the subject.

You can find a complete list of everyone participating in this month’s #ArchiTalks challenge below.

Did you miss last month’s articles? My latest contribution was “Well, How Did I Get Here?
